Maleic Acid

Maleic Acid other names (Z)-butenedioic acid, cis-butenedioic acid, malenic acid, maleinic acid, toxilic acid, is a colorless crystalline compound has a faint acidulous odor and a characteristic repulsive, astringent taste. It is primarily used as a precursor to fumaric acid, and relative to its parent maleic anhydride. Maleic Acid is used in industry as an adhesion promoter for different substrates such as nylon and zinc coated metals, as a corrosion inhibitor and anti-scaling agent, and as an intermediate. Maleic acid is produced by the hydration of maleic anhydride.

Maleic Acid is widely used in the manufacture of phthalic-type alkyd and polyester resins, surface coatings, copolymers, plasticizers, lubricant additives and agricultural chemicals; in adhesives and sealants; as a preservative for oils and fats; organic synthesis; dyeing and finishing wool, cotton and silk; and preparing the maleate salts of antihistamines and similar drugs.
